A new airline Covid 19 5 star safety rating for airlines has just been announced

British Airways and Lufthansa are the first airlines to be graded, and both have been awarded 4 stars

This appears NOT to be government led, but a new system introduced by SKYTRAX. This organisation rates airlines and airports around the world for customer service and procedures implemented by the relevant authorities. It's a similar company to JD Power, who rate motor manufacturers and dealers for customer service and satisfaction. Like JD Power, SKYTRAX are highly regarded in their industry
It is not unusual to see SKYTRAX certificates on display at Heathrow T5, awarding it TERMINAL OF THE YEAR. Bear in mind that this award is global NOT JUST UK wide. A great achievement for any business to be voted the best in their industry

BA were rated on its Heathrow T5 base. They were inspected and assessed on their Covid hygiene and safety practices they have introduced and also their method and consistency of implementation. This is to ensure the safety of their passengers and staff at all times.

Not only was the terminal assessed, but also the aircraft. SKYTRAX wanted to see how the planes were inspected and treated. BA use UV sanitation machines to detect any germs and a disinfection system used to kill off any germs. In particular, high touch areas are given extra attention (armrests, seatbelts and fold down trays as an example)

Personally, I welcome the SKYTRAX initiative. It is another thing airlines are embracing in order to try and attract customers. But the real change will be when global governments and countries feel safe to relax quarantine restrictions and encourage people to travel again - and this I believe will only really happen when a vaccine arrives

Thanks for reading - I hope you are all keeping well and safe
